Brown-Black Carpenter Ant
Brown-Black Carpenter Ant
Brown-Black Carpenter Ant, Camponotus ligniperda, found throughout Europe in trees, stones, and logs, is a dominate and aggressive species. It's similar to its sister ant, Camponotus herculeanus, but prefers drier habitats. Despite their territorial behavior, their bites are not harmful to humans. They primarily forage for prey and sweet secretions from insects, and are active day and night. During winter, they enter a lengthy diapause period. Mature colonies can exceed 7,000 workers and are known to inhabit multiple nests over a large area.
