Scarce Cardinal Beetle
Scarce Cardinal Beetle
This beetle is found throughout much of Europe, with a particular presence in mountainous regions and the northern parts of Scandinavia and Russia. Its larvae grow under bark, feeding on organic matter and other insects. When in high numbers, they may even turn to cannibalism. Smaller in size, at 7-9mm, than other pyrochroids, the adults can be recognized by a distinctive black mark on the pronotal disc. The male's antennae are also unique, with a strong pectinate shape, while the female's are less so. Its distribution is a key factor in identifying this species, as no other red-colored beetles inhabit the same areas as Schizotus.
