The Two-girdled Digger Wasp is a striking, medium-sized insect with a vibrant black and yellow color pattern. Its slender, elongated body boasts two distinct bands on the abdomen. Like many digger wasps, the Sphex biserialis is a solitary creature, with females taking charge of constructing and stocking their own nests. These fearless females choose soft, sandy areas to dig their underground homes, filling them with paralyzed prey such as grasshoppers and crickets. It's no surprise these wasps are sought after for their ability to immobilize their preferred prey with a quick sting, leaving them fresh and ready for the developing larva. But the most fascinating aspect of this species is the way they girdle their prey not once, but twice, using their powerful jaws to aid in carrying the prey to their nest.
